Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a systemic form of treatment for cancer.  It utilizes chemical agents that kill rapidly dividing cells, including cancer cells.  Unfortunately, chemotherapy does not differentiate cancer cells from other rapidly growing cells found in the bone marrow, digestive tract, and hair follicles. 

This accounts for the side effects of chemotherapy, which include bone
marrow suppression and digestive problems. Alopecia is not common
in our veterinary patients, except in dogs with continuously growing
hair coats.  The goal of chemotherapy is to prolong the survival time
while maintaining a good quality of life.
