Dr. Nicole Y. Nashiro
I was born in Honolulu and grew up on the Leeward side of Oahu. I attended McKinley High School and volunteered at a number of organizations, including the Hawaiian Humane Society, Honolulu Zoo, and Waikiki Aquarium. My undergraduate study was completed at the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, and I received by Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University. In 2005 I completed an internship program at Encina Veterinary Hospital, California. My professional interests include endoscopy, laparoscopy, and Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine, such as acupuncture. I believe integrating Eastern and Western Medicine provides more tools for healing patients.
In my free time I enjoy traveling, reading, and spending time with my family, my shelter dog Maggie, and my 3 legged cat Susie.
Dr. Mellissa R.L. Yuen
I was born in Ontario, Canada and raised on the beautiful (but cold!) east coast of Canada in Nova Scotia. I attended the veterinary school in Prince Edward Island, Canada and happily moved to Oahu to work at the Waipahu-Leeward Veterinary Clinic in 2006. I have a special interest in holistic medicine and enjoy the integration of Eastern medicine philosophies and Western medicine practices. As a result of my interests in these fields, I am able to offer Acupuncture and Low-Intensity Laser Therapy as treatment options for a variety of common ailments of both dogs and cats. Some of these ailments include: hip dysplasia, back pain, intervertebral disc disease, osteoarthritis, skin wounds, etc.
I enjoy spending my free time with my friends, going to the beach, volunteering, and overall enjoying the scenery and warmth in Hawaii. My miniature schnauzer (Yoshi) and my cocker spaniel (Beau) keep me quite active!
As a veterinarian, the human-animal bond never ceases to amaze and touch me. Meeting and seeing people who care for their pets is such a gratifying part of my job. It is my pleasure to assist people and work with them to make their pet's life as happy as they deserve.
Dr. Aya Ushijima
I was born and raised in Colorado and received both my bachelors degree in Zoology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University. I just recently moved to Hawaii in June 2010 and joined the wonderful team at Waipahu Leeward Veterinary Clinic.
My professional interests include oncology, dermatology, and shelter medicine. I have participated in RAVS (Rural Area Veterinary Service) trips to Arizona to provide free spay/neuter clinics to areas in need of veterinary care. In the near future, I would like to volunteer my time helping out with spay/neuter programs at a local humane society to help decrease the amount of stray cats here on Oahu!
I believe that animals can provide so much for us humans by being a great companion, friend, and family member. I promote preventative medicine in order to help animals share a happy, healthy, and long life with their owners.
Outside of the clinic, I love to play sports such as volleyball, tennis, and softball. I greatly enjoy spending time with Karl, my significant other, and his family playing cards or watching movies.
Dr. Stephanie M. Dean
I am a local girl, born and raised on the "otherside" of the island in Kailua. I attended Punahou School ('00), where I participated in multiple ocean sports. I attended U.C. San Diego before transferring to the University of Utrecht in The Netherlands, where I graduated in 2005 with a BSc in Biology. During my years in Holland, I volunteered at the local animal shelter caring for the rescued dogs and cats. Still wanting to explore Europe, I attended veterinary school at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, graduating in 2009. I have many fond memories of my time spent abroad; however, I am happy to be back home in paradise!
I feel honored to be a member of the veterinary profession; and it is my aim to always provide quality care for my patients. My interests lay in small animal preventative medicine, general practice medicine, surgery, and diagnostics- including imaging and microscopy.
I have a mixed breed dog, Duchess, that I rescued as a puppy while she was being treated for parvovirus disease. Duchess and I enjoy hiking, running, walking and kayaking together. We also enjoy playing with a ball at the local park. In my leisure time, I enjoy cook-outs with friends and family and participating in a variety of outdoor sports and activities.
